1968, RCA Victor

The final Gold Records volume released during Elvis’ lifetime, Elvis' Gold Records Volume 4 brings together the King's biggest hits from 1961 to 1967. Issued in January 1968 by RCA Victor in both mono and stereo, this album compiles a mix of Top 40 A-sides and essential B-sides from Elvis’ evolving career.

Despite shifts in the music industry, Elvis remained a dominant force, consistently landing albums in the Top Ten and delivering singles that resonated with audiences. However, this compilation arrived during a period when the music scene was changing, and while it sold 400,000 copies—outpacing his recent soundtrack albums—it fell short of the blockbuster sales of previous Gold Records volumes.

Notable Tracks:

  • Return to Sender – A timeless classic from Girls! Girls! Girls!
  • Viva Las Vegas – A rock & roll anthem covered by artists from Bruce Springsteen to Nine Inch Nails.
  • Love Letters – A beautifully heartfelt ballad from the 1945 film of the same name.
  • What’d I Say – A legendary take on the Ray Charles classic.
  • Crying in the Chapel – A gospel masterpiece that went to #3 and sold over a million copies.

Unlike previous volumes, which covered a span of two to three years, this album captures Elvis’ chart-topping success across five years, from his early-’60s dominance to his pre-comeback era. It is also the last Gold Records volume released during his lifetime, making it a true collector’s piece.

This is the original master release. While RCA reissued the album in 1989 and again in 1997 (adding six bonus tracks and altering the tracklist), the original 1968 version is the definitive edition, preserving the carefully curated selection of hits as it was meant to be heard.
